Individual Protection from AIG

Meet our experts

Debbie Bolton
Head of Underwriting and Claims Strategy

I am the Head of Underwriting and Claims Strategy, which involves setting the AIG Life philosophy and practices for claims and underwriting, striking the careful balance between the human touch and technology, and ensuring that we are easy to do business with by advisers and customers alike.

I have worked within the insurance sector for over 20 years, 18 of those within the underwriting and claims space. My experience spans from Countrywide Assured to AEGON to AIG Life and I have overseen an enormous amount of change over the years with the move from paper to digital, and from complex to simple. The one thing that remains constant is that people need protection. It’s very important to me and the team is to ensure that underwriting processes are not a blocker to someone obtaining insurance. This could be automation and immediate activation of a policy, but equally, it could mean providing support when there is a very large or complex protection need by simplifying the complexities and making the process straightforward.

The process of claiming is an area where we pay very close attention to, and it is under continuous scrutiny by the team and me. We want to pay claims sensitively, quickly and remove any barriers to this. There are digital solutions to help us with this, and alongside this, we ensure that we maintain sensitive and compassionate human contact.

Helen Croft
Underwriting & Claims Strategy Manager

In my role as Underwriting & Claims Strategy Manager, I work alongside Debbie and our team of development underwriting and claims experts to deliver innovative underwriting and claims initiatives to help grow AIG Life and the protection market.

I’ve worked in underwriting for over 10 years with experience ranging from operations to development underwriting to my current role. I am so happy to be where I am now at what is an incredibly exciting time for the industry. I see a lot of opportunity to innovate, create, explore new technologies and evolve the role of underwriters. I’m focussed on exploring the future of underwriting, promoting underwriting in new and (hopefully!) interesting ways and making the underwriting process as easy and open as possible to help more people get insurance.

I’m passionate about the power of underwriting and the value of underwriters, being a member of both the AMUS & LUCID committees to promote knowledge sharing and have recently joined the Insuring Women’s Futures initiative as an ambassador.
